Federal Square Switzerland
There is not a single sculpture of a real historical woman in the Federal Palace or on the Federal Square in the capital of Switzerland. Half of society is not represented.
University of Zurich
At the University of Zurich you can find many naked female statues. But are there artworks made by women too?
Only 2 artists have realized a work of art in the main building of the University of Zurich (2023). Despite the university's efforts to promote equality, Pipilotti Rist is only the second female artist to have realized a work in the main building. The first artist was Margherita Osswald-Toppi (1897-1971), the wife of the sculptor Paul Osswald: in 1913, at the age of only sixteen, she had created Die vier Jahreszeiten (The Four Seasons), 19 bas-reliefs with small human figures, which were placed on three ground-floor sides of the atrium in the wall panels supported by pairs of columns.
In the auditorium of the University of Zurich there are 10 busts of men. It seems that no woman has ever accomplished anything here.
Women have to be nacked to be shown in public spaces
It’ all about female statues in public space: they are mostly naked and without names.
Sarah Montani does not complain about this, "the statues are really beautiful and aesthetic, I don't mind the nudity itself, but mostly they are just allegorical, impersonal and have no name, no identity. And there are so many of them, in every city. Men, on the other hand, are usually depicted in a completely different way, as king, inventor, general, on horseback and - dressed.".
In these works, which are also multi-layered in a figurative sense, the artist dresses and gives names to the anonymous female statues by means of various artistic processes - and thus ultimately wishes for "more statues in public space that represent real women who once existed in real life." (S. Montani in an interview).
Where? More than 100 Statues in over 30 Countries have already been dressed up to now. The women statues to give them a dignity and identity with the clothing. The women's bust was also placed next to monuments of men: Here it is remembered that there were also historical women - even if they were systematically forgotten and omitted in the historiography, which was mostly done by men.
This systematic forgetting is called Oblivionism.

What?
What is the artistic process? The artist has created several pieces of clothing with which she dresses the naked female statues. Thus they get - together with their clothes - a name and an identity, and are no longer just outdated symbolic images of past times. They are brought to life, in the here and now. We often walk past monuments, they are unnoticed and invisible. They are made visible and tangible by the artist's new technique.
