We are very honored to show our Art at EMΣT, because Greece fights with a lot of problems and art is not the first priority of the country. But EMΣT is an absolutly great institution, directed by a visionary woman, Katerina Gregos. EMΣT communicates its clear mission: This is very progressive and even futuristic. It may serve as a model for other museums. What about women representation in Greece? She says in an interview: “The majority of cultural institutions of Greece are run by women. The State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, as is the Thessaloniki Biennial; the National Gallery in Athens is also run by a woman; even important private institutions such as NEON, Onassis Stegi, and the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre: all run by women. Paradoxically, it is the rest of the world that needs to do some catching up here. By comparison, the situation in Belgium, where I was living for more than 15 years (and still have a base in) is dismal. Most senior positions in the art world are held by men and no one even sees or acknowledges the problem.”

AR art shown at EMΣT in Athen is three-dimensional, untouchable, odorless and weightless. This new art form is a phenomenon that cannot be adequately described with words: the fascination arises from experiencing it, from trying it out, and seeing it with one's own eyes. It is the world's first art project to exhibit AR art in museums and make it available without application.

To see the artworks, go to the Museum and take your smartphone with you. Please ensure that location services are enabled on your smartphone. Go to this website and choose EMΣT to see the sculptures. AR art "appears" in front of and inside museums and can be perceived through the lens of a smartphone camera. These artworks are exclusively accessible in the world's largest museums, thanks to the latest technology (GEO AR), within a radius of 50 - 100 meters on museum grounds.

Quotes Katerina Gregos

“Museums are important centers for alternative knowledge production and critical thinking, where one should see inspiring and memorable art that stands out in times of image bloat and overproduction.” “I am particularly sensitive to the precarious financial situation in which most artists find themselves, especially in countries like Greece, where it is customary not to pay artists any fees. I will change this for EMST and introduce the payment of artists' fees.”

Mission EMΣT

EMΣT advocates and enforces fair pay for artists and cultural practitioners, and does not condone the precarious labour practices that are still widespread within the field of contemporary visual arts.

EMΣT condemns ageism – the effect of an art market that is always obsessed with new, young artists – and will give equal opportunity to mid-career and older artists.

EMΣT aims to bring contemporary art and visual culture to a broader audience in a country where antiquity has long dominated culture, often at the expense of the modern and contemporary.

EMΣT’s objective is to become more sustainable, as climate change becomes the most important global challenge facing us today, and to develop public awareness of sustainability and environmental protection/conservation.

Katerina Gregos Biographie: For over 15 years Gregos has also worked as an independent curator and writer. She was curator of the 1st International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Riga and curated the Gothenburg Biennial, Manifesta, Thessaloniki Biennial and three national pavilions at the Venice Biennale for Denmark, Belgium and Croatia. Since 2016 she is curator of the Schwarz Foundation.

Swiss Artist Sarah Montani's Augmented Reality Sculptures Take Center Stage at EMΣT in Athens

EMΣT, the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, hosts a remarkable exhibition featuring the augmented reality (AR) sculptures of Swiss artist Sarah Montani. This groundbreaking showcase celebrates the convergence of art and technology. The artist highlights the forward-thinking approach of EMΣT, under the visionary leadership of Katerina Gregos. She choose the museum to start her World Expo+.

The work of EMΣT is significant, particularly considering the challenges that Greece faces and the competing priorities within the country. Despite this, EMΣT remains an exceptional institution, guided by the visionary leadership of Katerina Gregos. With a clear mission and a progressive, even futuristic approach, EMΣT sets an example that other museums can look up to. Katerina Gregos emphasizes the importance of women's representation in Greece's cultural institutions, pointing out that the majority of these institutions, including EMΣT itself, are led by women. This stark contrast with the global art world highlights the need for other countries to address gender inequality.

AR art, as showcased by the artist at EMΣT, transcends traditional artistic boundaries. These three-dimensional, untouchable, odorless, and weightless sculptures redefine the art experience. Describing the impact of AR art is challenging as its fascination lies in experiencing, trying, and seeing it firsthand. This exhibition is the first of its kind, making AR art available in museums without the need for any additional applications - and even without the official invitation of the museum.

To view the artworks, visitors are invited to the museum with their smartphones. It is important to ensure that location services are enabled. By accessing the designated website and selecting EMΣT, visitors can witness the AR art sculptures manifesting in front of and inside the museum. This exclusive experience is made possible by the latest technology (GEO AR), providing access within a radius of 50-100 meters on the museum grounds.

Katerina Gregos, renowned curator and the driving force behind EMΣT, shares her vision for the museum, stating, "Museums play a crucial role in promoting alternative knowledge production and critical thinking. They should showcase inspiring and memorable art that stands out amidst the overwhelming abundance of images. At EMΣT, we prioritize fair pay for artists and cultural practitioners, challenge ageism in the art market, and strive to bring contemporary art and visual culture to a wider audience."

EMΣT's mission aligns with the pursuit of sustainability and environmental awareness, crucial in the face of global climate change. The museum seeks to raise public consciousness of environmental protection and conservation, aiming for a more sustainable future.

Sarah Montani's AR sculptures at EMΣT offer a unique and transformative artistic experience that challenges conventional notions of art and pushes the boundaries of creativity.
